Sri Lanka is bouncing back after a turbulent recent past. The long civil war with the Tamil Tigers in the north ended (in controversial circumstances) in May 2009, and the island’s coast has fully recovered from the worst effects of 2004’s Indian Ocean tsunami.
This Asian pearl has a rich and colourful history. The fabled land of Serendip attracted Arab traders as early as the seventh century - the Arabic word Serendib means ‘Island of Jewels’. Today, Galle Fort’s mosques show the influence of these first overseas adventurers.
The Portuguese arrived in 1505 and monopolised the valuable spice trade for a century before the Dutch took over in 1602. Eventually in 1818 the British established a unified administration over the island they called Ceylon, and the Union Jack flew until independence in 1948.
Sri Lanka is beguiling and mysterious: we left wanting to know more, we hope you’ll feel the same.
