Water Sports on Lake Gregory
Lake Gregory is located about four kilometers away from Spring Acre, just past the Nuwara Eliya town. It was built during the period 1872-1877 by the then Governor of Ceylon, William Gregory. With the intention of generating electricity, a dam was built across the “Thalagala” stream in Nuwara Eliya, which starts from the “Piduruthalagala” mountain range. The water from the lake was taken away up to a place called “Blackpool” in Nuwara Eliya using a tunnel to generate electricity for the town.
The Ministry of Tourism along with the Municipal Council of Nuwara Eliya launched the Lake Gregory improvement and landscaping project in 2009. Pathways have been built over the edges of the lake so you can take a nice stroll around or sit beside the water and relax. Facilities for boating, rowing and fishing is available. Children can enjoy pony rides along the lake. Bikes are also available for hire. Click here to see location on Google Maps Airtaxi take-off from Lake Gregory, Nuwara Eliya
