Horse & Pony Rides are available at the Racecourse and on the banks of Lake Gregory. Horse racing is one of the oldest sports established in Sri Lanka, which has been seen traditionally for nearly 150 years since is inception in 1860. In the last decade or so, The Turf Club has stepped up its activities to make Horse racing an entertaining, exciting and colorful tradition of Nuwara Eliya during holiday seasons. Roundly acknowledged as the ‘Epsom’ of Sri Lanka, the annual Nuwara Eliya Races presented by the Turf Club undoubtedly is the highlight and buzz-word for breathtaking excitement and thrills for not only sportsmen, but for all who throng Sri Lanka’s ‘Little England’ during the holiday season, especially in April. The city’s race course is the setting for a variety of horseracing events during the month of April. In previous years, the list of race meetings has included the Governor's Cup, Labookelle Cup, Upali Wijewardene Kandos Cup, Nescafe Cup, Sporting Times Trophy, Sumathi Cup and Sunquick Cup. In addition to experiencing the thrill of racing, there will also be other interesting diversions at the race course – Fashion shows and a show of fashion by attendees; which will attract a variety of prizes including; ‘Best Dressed Lad, ‘Best Dressed Gent’ and ‘Most Photogenic Personality’. In August 2011, the Ministry of Sports has taken over the ownership of the country’s only Horse race course at Nuwara Eliya from the Sri Lanka Turf Club. Now the ownership of the Nuwara Eliya Race Course has been given to the Sugathadasa National Sports Complex Authority (SNSCA). The race course is just 5 minutes drive from Spring Acre.
